A Simple PEMF Device

This first post is going to start with how to build a simple PEMF device. No introduction on why you would want to do this, or the benefits of the device, that will come later, or you can search the web for this information. The device is simple – you need an MP3 player, an electromagnet, and some MP3 files that contain a signal that will generate a healing and beneficial pulsed electromagnetic field from the electromagnets.

For this first implementation, I recommend getting these magnets:alleva

These magnets are found on the internet for between $27 to $30 US dollars, and go by the name ICES PEMF Replacement coils (See note below dated Aug 12, 2015). They have a plug you can put into a headphone jack of an MP3 player. I found some on Ebay that were $23 USD including shipping.

Ideally you already have a device that can play MP3 files. This could be a dedicated MP3 player, a computer, tablet, or phone. If you have none of these, you can take the MP3 files and burn them to an audio CD.

Whatever MP3 player you have, there are 2 important features that are necessary. The first is the ability to plug it into your wall power while playing, as you will want to use this device for long periods of time, and this will drain batteries. The other feature the player needs to support is repeating a song over and over, a single song repeat mode.

Download the MP3s that are in later posts, load them to your MP3 player, put the player into repeat mode, plug the coils into the headphone jack of your MP3 player and play. For these particular coils, its best to have the smooth side of the coil facing your body.  The next posts describes the various set of MP3 files that are useful for better sleep, pain relief, and improved circulation.

The Downloads are offered in three different audio file formats. For Apple and iOS products (iPod, iPhone, iPad), choose Apple Lossless (ALAC). For open source music players, like Android 3.1+ and Rockbox, or commercial players like RIM Blackberry, Cowon, Creative Zen, HiFiMAN, Sansa Clip family, TrekStor, iRiver, Archos, and Latte, choose Free Lossless (FLAC). If your music player cannot handle the other lossless formats, choose MP3, which is a lossy format. The ALAC and FLAC formats will offer no distortion and smaller download size, while the MP3 files are distorted because of the lossy compression.

[Aug 21, 2015 Update] The Alleva-wave and Somapulse products have been taken off the market by their parent company, Micro-Pulse LLC, and are now marketed under the Micro-Pulse label. To buy these coils, go the Micro-Pulse website and buy the replacement coils for the Micro-Pulse product.

  1. Hi Prana Deva
First of all, huge kudos for the work.

    1) There is a great software that might be useful for people who wish to experiment with their own set of frequencies. It’s called “Neuro-Programmer 3” and people can get it here:

    http://www.transparentcorp.com/products/np/

They have a trial version; I would love to hear your opinion on it. after buying it you can create a WAV file for a sleep program or any other program you wish to use, but even without it you can connect the PEMF coil you suggested to your computer and see for yourself.

    2) What do you think about using a Headphone Splitter Jack with 2 coils in order to increase the intensity of the magnetic field? example to such item can be found here:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/370783456201

I guess the big issue will be the fact the audio output of most players will not provide the required mojo for the extra coil…

    3) Do you know of any hack that will allow us to use the EarthPulse magnet with an audio player?

Again, huge thanks for your work
    PEMFman

    • Hi PEMFman,

Thanks for the feedback. Anyone can create their own frequency sets here on this website in MP3, Apple Lossless, and Free Lossless formats. There are also a Brainwave Frequency list that can give you frequencies to create different brain wave states. Much of the features of the NP3 are designed for use over speakers rather than electromagnets like the Diypemf.

As for using a splitter, this is a good idea if you want to apply magnetic fields over multiple areas, but power to each coil will be cut in half with a standard spitter. You can create your own splitter with a 3.5mm headphone male connector and two 3.5 female connectors that won’t cut the power in half to each coil, because the coils only use the right channel. Wire the ground of the male connector to the ground of both female connectors. Wire the left channel of the male to the right channel of one of the female connectors, and the right channel of the male to the right channel of the other female connector. The tip of the male connector is the left channel, the middle section of the connector is the right channel, and the part closest to the base of the connector is the ground.

Making an adapter for the Earthpulse magnet ought to be easy. I no longer have the Earthpulse device, so I can’t give you instructions. But the Earthpulse magnet is a simple magnet, and if doesn’t work in an audio player as is, it must be because the magnet is wired to the left channel and right channel connector, thus confusing any audio player. You would need to create your own adapter to make one of the wires go to ground, and the other could go to the right channel.

    • Hi Rife, the Sansa Clip+ is a nice and inexpensive MP3 player. New it goes for $40, but you can find them refurbished for $10 less. These MP3 players have a better frequency response curve than the iPod. They also play the FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) files, that have have no distortions due to compression like MP3.

      • Thank you for the quick reply Prana, appreciated!

How important you think is the output of the mp3 player for best results? I ll guess our brain at rest will be easy to entrain to the frequency, but I am wondering if a higher output could further improve the results?

        Best placement for magnets?

If I remember correctly at the end of the session you are bringing the frequency to Beta? Have you experienced an effect strong enough to wake at the 8 hour mark without an alarm?

Huge thanks for this idea! I am really having issues with sleep quality. I thought about making a device with a similar logic myself in the past, but this is great to try, really easy to put together and inexpensive!

        • The MP3 player output is high enough for brain entrainment. For deeper healing inside the body, an amplifier would help. Because the resistance of the coils is low (~2 ohms), it may be necessary to put a 50 ohm resistor in series with the coils.

I use the coils under my pillow for sleeping. When I use the diypemf in my car, I place 1 coil hanging from the top of the behind my neck, and the other coil between the seat and the back facing my sacrum. For other uses, check out the Somapulse User Guide.

If I am really tired/underslept, going to Beta wave doesn’t always wake me up. Nowadays, I mostly use the Delta Wave from Brain Wave Series for sleeping, and rely on an alarm clock to wake me up.

      • Hi Prana Deva,

I’m vibing your name, and loving the site. Reminds me of Infinite Possibilities!:)

        I just brought a M1 MicroPulse and I’m experimentating.

I’d lilke to get a DIY MP3 set-up for those of friends that can’t afford the tech.

I checked out “Sansa Clip+” on Amazon and it’s nowhere to be found. There’s a couple of “Sansa Clip+” on eBay, but I’m wondering is their more advanced and equal quality MP3s now in 2020.

        Sansa Clip+ was released in 2011: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SanDisk_Sansa#Sansa_Clip+

  3. Hi there,

Thanks for all this great advice and info. I’d really like to try this out but just went to order the coils from Micro-pulse and the shipping alone cost $67, I’m in the U.K. I can’t find anything similar over here so I’m wondering is there a way of making the coils or adapting something else? Unless of course you or anyone else knows of somewhere that supplies to the UK without extortionate shipping charges.

    All and any solutions welcome.

    Many thanks. 🙂

  4. Hi Prana,
    thanks for the informative site.
I am curious what the difference between just listening to these files would be vs using the magnetic coils. doesn’t listening to delta waves induce it in the brain? if so why get coils then

    • Listen would work, but not as effectively as the coil. When you listen through a pair of speakers, you get the magnetic field too, but some of the energy goes into sound. With the coils, you get the full magnetic energy, plus there is no annoying sounds. The coils are completely quiet.

  5. Dear Bryan\Prana Deva,

I haven’t seen much postings lately from you on S2.
I hope all goes well and you are making your desired progress in both your health and spiritual development.

If you need any help with 8D or Hunter, please do not hesitate to ask.

    Note:

if you want changes, make a bugslist and all below 0.450 into spooky2.
Monitor them going up to 1500 then your are really safe.

If you treat with The Hunter, go deep to the lowest level at RNA, treat the molecules, guanine, adenine, uracil and thymine
Then go to the mitochondria, treat the outer membrame, then the atp synthesizing system.
Then go up to dna, genes etc.

It takes more effort but if you go from there back to the cell and organ level, miracles happen.

A spiritual brother (btw like the hindoe paintings on the wall) 🙂

    Wim

    • Yes. I’ve tried and tested this setup, and it does work. You need the Spooky coil that works with Spooky Central, NOT the one that works with the Spooky XM. These two coils are the same coil, with a 1/4 inch plug, but the configuration for the Spooky Central has an 1/4 inch to 1/8th inch adapter, while the coil for the Spooky XM has a 1/4 inch to BNC adapter.

  6. I want to make my PEMF device. Actually I tested with a friend the IMRS 2000 and I love but is so expensive. I have some stress and high heart beats at nights usually and the PEMF makes me feel very comfortable it works. Now for my custom PEMF device I bought the sansa clip+ but I have these questions:

1.-What amplifier is suggested for best power and results?
2.-And with the amplifier suggested can I use to use 2 set of coils:
    https://www.micro-pulse.com/collections/frontpage/products/audio-splitter
or is required custom made by myself following your instructions in prior post? I don’t know if that splitter is already constructed for the purpose because is sold by micro-pulse like the coils.
3.-Or any dual output amplifier suggested to use 2 set of coils at the same time?

    • 1. I dont have an answer for you on this, because I haven’t done any formal experimentation (I’ve play with a few stereo amps, but I did’t record the results, and I don’t have tools to measure frequency response).
      2. The audio splitter — I don’t know the wiring. You can make your own splitter, that sends the right channel to one coil, and the left channel to the other. Each of these coils pairs are mono, and I show the wiring somewhere in the comments in this blog.

      3. Sorry, no suggestions from me here.

  7. Also I forgot another question for example this frequency:

    https://diypemf.com/cgi-bin/mkfreq.cgi/mkfreq/rife.html?trackname=Arryhthmia+heart+TR&description=also+use+magnesium%2C+CoQ10%2C+and+fish+oil&frequency=696%2C7.83&dwell=180

How you place the coils to treat that kind of treatments for the heart? I saw some placements for legs, arms and so on… But I have that question to where to o,ace to treat heart problems?

And what it means dwell 180?

    • For the heart, I would place one coil on your chest facing your heart, the other behind your back facing your heart also.

The dwell = 180 means that each frequency will run for 180 seconds if no time is specified, so dwell is the default running time of a frequency. To have your set have different run times for each frequency, you can specify for example: 696=3000,7.83=90. This means run 696 for 3000 seconds, and then run 7.83 for 90 seconds.

  8. Hello,
Thank you for this very informative site. I am looking to buy the replacement coils but live in France and don’t see anyone who ships over here. Do you have any suggestions or alternatives?

  9. Hi
Has anyone a copy of the Elector Circuit, 1970’s, 80’s?

Unable to find it on the Net.

I build the circuit at the time but instead of using their wound “bolt” I made up a pouch with ~100turns of thin wire on the rim then used steel wool in the middle of the coil.

Took time but was very effective in solving a back pain problem which had bothered me for years.

Have another use for the circuit again, would appreciate a copy of the article or a link thereto.

    Cheers

  10. Hi,
    Hi Prana Deva,

Currently, I have a model A9 running on 9V battery from micro pulse.

I tried to build a PEMF device as lised in your article. I downloaded the single frequency files and connected the coils instead to my iPad but it does not seem to be able to power coils.

I switched back I the A9 and the coils seems to work again.

Do I need to boost the iPad phone jack output? Or am I missing something?

    Please advise.

    • If you are using a coil tester from the A9 device, it may not be able to register the low voltage and current when the coils are connected to the iPad. But that doesn’t mean the coils aren’t working. See this article Testing Your Coils.

  11. Hi Prana,

First, thank you for this fascinating and useful site!

I’ve looked at the cost of a really good gauss meter and it’s a little scary…

Is there a formula to calculate the gauss field of an air coil? After searching I’ve found several conflicting equations and wonder if there is one you use.

    My thanks again,

    Nic

    • Yes, there is a formula based on the diameter of the coil, the gauge of the wire, and the current, but I don’t know the formula off the top of my head. But you can easily find this in Google.

    • I normally use the Replacement coils. The advantage of the bedding coil is it spreads the signal over a larger area. However, this will also spread the current among 4 coils instead of two, weakening the magnetic field by half.

  12. Hi Prana,

Many thanks for sharing this with US!!!
I purchased the coils, downloaded the mp3 file…I am ready to go! Question: when I play the file on the MP3 I can here tapping sounds for about 4-5 seconds then the track goes silent…when I pause and play again I am able to here the noise again, but then it goes away after few seconds. Everytime. Is this how is supposed to be or the file is corrupted? I believe in placebo but I would like to make sure I have the track that makes the coils work (I am using an iphone, so I downloaded that version). Many thanks in advance!!!!
    Guillermo Martin

    • Depending on which MP3 file you downloaded, you may or may not hear the signals. Can you tell exactly which file you downloaded, and I will test it out to see if I can hear the frequencies.

      • Another thing you can to do see if the mp3 file is corrupted is to load it in a audio editor like Audacity (free on Windows, Mac, and Linux).

        • Hi Prana. Thanks for answering! I tried Audacity but the software says it can not open the file with the current format and suggests to convert it to “WAV or AIFF”. I decided not to convert the audio as this might ruin the frequencies (not sure)… but if you think converting the file is NOT problem I will. As for your questions, I downloaded the “Apple Lossless ALAC” file as I am trying to use an iphone for this. Thank you!

          • I can check the ALAC for corruption, but you didn’t state specifically which file you downloaded. Please let me know, I will download that file and check to see if the file is corrupted.

          • Well, I downloaded that file, and it is not corrupted. The reason you can’t hear anything when you play it on iTunes is because the waveform is a 7.83 Hz sine wave, modulated with a 0.5 Hz sine wave. Both these frequencies (7.83 & 0.5) are under the audible lowest frequency of 20 Hz. You might get an occasional thump that doesn’t get filtered via some high pass filter (most system want to filter out low frequency hums and buzzes).

  13. Hi Prana, have you seen the devices on the below website? I must be missing something because it sounds too good to be true? Inexpensive and very high powered, I was hoping you would offer your opinion before I purchased their Schumann Signal Generator or any of the other products. Your thoughts would be much appreciated, thank you.

    http://www.lessemf.com/schumann.html

    • Hi Victor, I looked at those Schumann generators. I don’t have any experience with any of those products, but I suspect they all work as stated. One comment on the first product, which sells for $150, where the coil antenna is sold for $45, making the cost of the generator $105. I think a better generator is the Spooky2-XM generator that goes for $100, plus it can be connected to your computer and can run rife frequency sets and protocols for cancer, morgellons and lyme disease. Plus there are tons of accessories that work the the Spooky2-XM, like a remote transmission device, TENS pads, cold laser, PEMF, and a plasma amplifier/tube.

      • I am concerned about the credibility of the spooky2 website, when they actively promote customer testimonials that describe having spiritual experiences as a result of PEMF application. Not very scientific, and possibly demonic. God bless.

  14. Hi Prana,

i follow your discussion on how to sleep better using lily wave, i wonder so to whether fixing the coiled wire to a sandisk mp 3 player and leaving it on my pillow is safe. apprecite your advise.thanks

    • I’ve done exactly what you described, playing frequencies out a coil connected to the sandisk player, and I had a very good experience helping me sleep. If the intensity of the magnetic field is too strong, you can lower the volume on you mp3 player.

      • Hi Prana,
I’m just guessing, but would a wireless cell phone charging pad be a PEMF device of sorts? Cheap charging pads like ChoeTech are only $10 or $15 on Amazon. no idea if they are PEMF devices or what the waveform, hz, or power output would be, but I would assume the power output would be up there. I recently purchased the micro pulse A9b and couldn’t be happier with it, so I’m just curious. Your thoughts?
        Best, Vic

          • Hi Prana, I already have an ices A9b. I was curious from a business man’s perspective. My thinking was if $10 phone chargers are Faraday Induction devices, then extrapolating estimating the cost of PEMF device modifications you get an idea of the probable gigantic markup on PEMF devices. Even Steve Jobs would have been envious lol.
            Best wishes,
            Vic

  15. An excellent source is mynoise.net
Many far out sound generators with customizable features.
The site also has a a few binaural beat/frequency generators.
Open a few windows, mix and match.
Record your choice, burn to CD or Mp3 player, play it through a 50 to 100 watt stereo amplifier.
Use the magnetic coils (Purchase from Micro-pulse.com or search for ICES PEMF) and plug in to the headphone jack. What comes next? A lot of introspection to see what works when (time of day/night), where (placement on body and environment),how (on your own, almost completely subjective), why (IMO the best clues are to be found at/through SuspiciosObservers.org with Electric Universe theory).
    Good luck!

  16. It has taken some time but finally found the Elektor article I was looking for.
Pull down https://www.americanradiohistory.com/UK/Elektor/70s/Elektor-1977-11.pdf and go to P32.

I did not use their inductor but made up another which worked well.

Stopped a lower back pain I had had for a number of years, used the 4.4Hz setting and did not mount the components for the other frequencies. You can mount the components if you wish to experiment.

    Cheers

  17. I really like the idea of using a music player to generate the signals. The only thing I’m concerned about is that a lot of PEMF uses very low frequencies. For example the Schumann Resonance is 7.83 hz and signals for delta wave sleep can be 2 hz. However non of the music players I know of are rated at less than 10hz. Even the Sansa Clip+ that you recommended above in the comments is only rated down to 10Hz. Are you sure that those music players correctly output the really low frequencies that we need (and if so, is the newest version of the Sansa Clip+ just as good as the older versions)?

    Thanks

  18. Prana Deva,

I am looking for a sleeping setup with PEMF (using your provided FLAC files). Thank you!

    https://www.micro-pulse.com/collections/frontpage

As you recommended, I can purchase a set of say 4 of the 2×2 coil arrays. Then place these on my mattress top (in the 4 corners of the mattress top).
Put my memory foam pad & cloth covers on top.

Is this a good setup a sleep on? Something that will work for the full 8 hours of sleep (while the FLAC is coming from my Android chromebook).

Will the 2×2 coil arrays transmit the PEMF frequencies through 4-inches of foam padding?

Since my Android has a single 1/8″ stereo audio port. Don’t I need an amplifier and “splitter” to provide the audio to the 4 coil arrays?

    Your information is very insightful.

I look forward to your response. – Reed

    • The audio signal coming from an MP3 player is already pretty weak. When you add more coils, the power gets split among those coils. You may need an amplifier to get a stronger signal among many coils.

  19. Okay. I did some testing. Sorry to say/burst the bubble, but this “simple pemf device” thing does not seem to (or very barely seem to) work. I own a MicroPulse ICES M1, as well as a set of MicroPulse coils with the standard 3.5 jack. I also have a Gauss meter. Plugging the coils into the M1, I get a constantly varying readout from about 1 uT (microtesla) to about 30 uT. Plugging the coils into my PC audio jack + playing music = no readout at all, in other words 0 uT. Plugging the coils into a high-end Samsung Note 9+, volume on max, playing a base-rich song from Google Music, I get a very occasional spike to 12 uT, but the general reading is 0 uT constantly. I am not even sure if the 12 uT spike was caused by my phone being somewhat near the meter. So I would say the difference is output strength seems 1:30, if not much higher/more, seemingly rendering the diy simple pemf device near non-functional. I suspect that the field generated by using the approach described here is extremely limited and minimal. It may perhaps work if you use it for sleeping with the volume on max and the coils directly skin-to-skin with your face, but for all serious work, I would recommend not going this way and simply fork out the money for a proper device. If the author of this blog is serious and honest he will not block this post from being published.

      • Thanks for answering

Spooky claims that with their generator the intensity of field on the coils is 1 Gauss.

Which is 3 times stronger than the field created by DiyPemf if I understand correctly. So the difference seems to be not huge. Might be a thicker pillow will help.

However, shape and duration of their impulse can’t be changed (69 microseconds; rectangular) – this makes a difference but I don’t know if it’s crucial.

        • If you are using the Spooky2 system, you can create your own waveform files. The waveform file is a text file that consists of 1024 values, each on their own line, between -1.0 and 1.0, that define the shape of the waveform. A square wave would have 512 values of 1.0, followed by 512 values of -1.0.

  20. Thank you for all this information you have provided. Im totally new in regards to PEMF and was hoping for some help please. I live in Australia and found this site for the coils https://www.pulselaserrelief.com.au/mini-pemf-quad-coil. Are they the correct ones.

Also how long would I play the frequency that I create for? I know you mentioned putting it on a loop but is there a minimum and maximum time that any frequency should run for

    thank you

    • I don’t know. If they are designed to work with a standard 1/4″ (3.5mm) headphone jack, then they will work.

As for playing frequencies, often I will do it for hours, say like overnight while I am sleeping. You can do it while you are watching a movie.

The time if up to you, in terms of if you feel you’ve gotten the relief you needed, or the effect you were trying to achieve, then you have done the treatment long enough.
